Technology Entrepreneur & Co-Founder of the QNX Real-Time Operating System,
Strategic Leader in Computing, Semiconductors, and Digital Systems Innovation,
Researcher Advancing AI, Verified Knowledge Systems & the Symbiotic Mind,
San Jose, California, USA
From 1965 to 1975, Syd Geraghty held research positions at various institutions, Elliott Automation Radar Research Laboratory, the Allen Clark Research Center, Plessey, and the Institute of Computer Science at the University of London (UCL) in England. In 1975-1981, he worked on the first Digital Switching Systems at Bell Northern Research (BNR) in Ottawa, Canada, and subsequently managed Semiconductor Technology Procurement and Communications Systems Testing at Northern Telecom in the United States.
In the years 1981-1984, he co-founded Quantum Software Systems, Inc. with his wife, Barbara Geraghty. He served as the CEO of the company, which developed and marketed the QNX Real-Time Operating System (RTOS). QNX has gained widespread adoption in various applications, including IBM’s Pervasive Computing initiative and Cisco’s high-performance networks. Currently, QNX 8.0 is owned by Blackberry in Canada and has significant hard-real-time systems applications with global impact.
From 1984 to 1995, he served as a Strategic Marketing Manager at Intel, Director of Strategic Semiconductor Materials at Sun Microsystems, and Director, then Vice President of Operations, for HaL Computer Systems. He retired in 1995.
From 1995 to 2025, he primarily engaged in technology consulting, and conducting independent research on Verified Computational Knowledge Generation Systems and, more recently, AI and “The Symbiotic Mind”. In 2006, he was Senior Director of Strategic Alliances at Chartered Semiconductor in Singapore. In the latter half of 2023, he assumed the pro bono role of Co-CEO and advisor for the Einstein Personal AI STEM Tutor, designed initially for disadvantaged students in Brazil. His primary ongoing project remains to honour Dr. Jacob Bronowski’s vision for assuring the “Ascent of Man” through the generation, access to, and application of, knowledge and humanism for the benefit of mankind.
Bachelor of Science in Mathematical Physics from the University of Sussex (1965).
Master of Science in Theoretical Solid State Physics from the University of Lancaster (1972).
Research Fellow at the Institute of Computer Sciences and the
Electrical Engineering Department of University College London from 1972 to 1975.
Alumnus of the Harvard Kennedy School Executive Education Programme
